Abstract

Ideally, Islamic higher education institutions function as inclusive and critical academic spaces that appreciate the diversity of Islamic intellectual traditions. In reality, however, the legacy of past theological conflicts continues to shape symbolic and institutional practices, including the politics of naming State Islamic Institutes (Institut Agama Islam Negeri/IAIN) in Aceh. The accusation of heresy leveled by Nuruddin ar-Raniry against Hamzah Fansuri regarding the doctrine of wahdat al-wujud not only led to the marginalization of philosophical Sufism in the seventeenth century but also produced a lasting discursive legacy that extends into contemporary Islamic higher education. This study aims to examine the continuity of this heretical discourse and its relation to the politics of naming IAIN in Aceh. It employs qualitative library research using critical discourse analysis as the primary methodological framework, complemented by an intellectual history approach. The findings reveal that the accusation of heresy functioned as a mechanism for consolidating orthodoxy through institutional legitimation and continues to be reproduced in modern symbolic practices. The naming of IAIN emerges as a site of contestation over scholarly authority, reflecting the persistence of hierarchical theological discourses within Acehnese Islam.
